My name is Mimi and I am having a secret affair with Dunkin Donuts smoothies. Our love affair began like most affairs do, innocently and almost entirely by accident. I was having one of those days – I woke up on the wrong side of the bed, was running late, I missed breakfast – not that I’ve ever been big on breakfast anyway and while out running errands I somehow managed to get lost.
Frustrated and really hungry, I pulled into a parking lot contemplating just calling it a day and driving back home to the comfort of my bed when I looked up and noticed a very colorful Dunkin Donuts sign blinking in my windshield. I had never been inside a Dunkin Donuts before but I figured my day couldn’t get any worse by checking it out and walked right in. Turns out it wasn’t exactly the smartest decision I had made that day because I gave up coffee about 5 years ago and I’m not really a huge fan of donuts (duh!). I smacked my forehead and turned to leave and that’s when something caught my eye – she was tall, beautiful and just the mere sight of her seduced my taste buds and made me drool. She was perfect and I absolutely had to have her. It was lust at first sight. Her name was tropical orange.
I rushed to the counter and after a few minutes of just silence and pointing at the menu, I managed to incoherently blat out, “I’ll have the tropical orange smoothie please”. The cashier must have thought I was crazy but I didn’t care. I was blinded by the beauty looking down at me from the menu and I couldn’t wait to taste her. I had the biggest grin on my face as the drink was poured in my large cup and I didn’t wait to find a seat before taking my first sip. The minute I paid for my tropical orange smoothie, I inhaled deeply and took a huge sip right there at the counter and she did not disappoint. She tasted as good as she looked. I was hooked.
I somehow made it back to my car, locked all my doors and leaned back to enjoy my smoothie and I knew with each sip this was the beginning of a lifelong addiction. I’m sure my thighs and waist line were not happy campers but I promised myself I would faithfully walk off the smoothie at the end of the day. After I sipped the last drop of that smoothie, my mood improved (seriously!) and I magically found the place I had been searching for. Ever since that day I’ve found countless excuses to go back to Dunkin Donuts for their smoothies. I cheated on tropical orange by trying the mango flavor and when I needed a sugar fix, I tried the strawberry flavor. Once, the cashier actually made me a mango strawberry smoothie. I was in heaven.
This smoothie addiction is a secret from even those close to me. I barely have any “me time” as a mom but when I do, I escape to the nearest Dunkin Donuts and indulge in a cool delicious smoothie.
